Dear friends and collegues
it is a pleasure to announce the workshop entitled
Modelling geophysical systems by statistical mechanics methods
to be held in
Erice from 27 April 2008 to 2 May 2008
The aim of this Workshop is to bring together solid earth geophysicists,
atmospheric scientists, oceanographers, space physicists, computational
scientists, applied mathematicians and engineers interested in the
interdisciplinary study of the non-linear dynamics of the complex
Earth-ocean-space (EOS) system. The Workshop will cover both
fundamental and applied research in turbulence, instabilities, chaos, complexity,
self-organized criticality, scaling, multifractals, pattern formation, non-linear
data and image analysis, as well as their application to the study of the EOS
system. Quantitative evaluation of non-linear behaviour and
sensitivity to initial conditions, understanding scales of earth processes
and their evolution in space and time are essential ingredients for
forecasting the temporal and spatial behaviour of many geophysical processes.
This Workshop will review  the state-of-the-art of this multidisciplinary
subject and try to promote collaborations among scientists with different
background. Special attention will be devoted to  theoretical and computational
studies of earthquake and volcanic eruption occurrence, space plasmas,
atmosphere and ocean phenomena and the impact of space weather on the
Earth´s environment.
Contributions from all these fields are strongly encouraged.
